Summer Jobs

May 23, 2011

Well it has been a wonderful beginning to what looks to be a promising summer. Visiting family and friends, and allowing all the stress from the previous semester to dissipate. But now it’s time to find a summer job. Yikes! Many employers don’t like to hire “college kids” simply because we are only around for the summer then, poof! Back to school we go. I consider myself very lucky to be local and able to keep a job year around should I choose to do so. However, many of my classmates are not so lucky. One of my dear friends lives 8 hours away! There is no way he could keep a job except for the summer.

One of the ways I go about landing a position is to overdress for my interview. If I am interviewing for a server position at a restaurant I will dress like a manager. Or as a rule-of-thumb always dress business casual; a pair of slacks, dress shoes, and a nice blouse (dress shirt for the guys) do very nicely. Sit up straight and look the interviewer in the eye when you answer their questions. Be sure that you give them a firm handshake to show that you mean business. But more than anything, be confident, firm, and don’t be afraid to answer no to a question or two. Good luck, see you all in August!
